Federoff, N.E. and R.M. Nowak. 1997. Man and his dog. Science 278:205.
Letter: Describes the authors reservations in relation to a paper by Vila et al. (1997) based on results of analysis of mtDNA suggesting a divergence of domestic dogs from wolves as much as 135,000 years ago and a molecular clock for the domestic dog based on substitution rates of wolves and coyotes. It was also suggested that domestication of the dog was a rare event and required special skill.
